It’s incredible to think that at the time Bowie saw this as a throwaway tune, and yet for many it represents the point at which the artist stepped away from the folk whimsy of previous recordings and began to create the myriad styles that would appear on “Hunky Dory” and subsequent albums from the 1970s. Rick Wakeman’s piano accompaniment lends itself perfectly to the mix of rock n’ roll and the cocktail lounge, and the closing Sax is filled with warm jazz/soul influence. His Chameleonic rise to superstardom was almost upon us, and this may just be the perfect introduction to the ever changing musical world of the gifted writer and performer.
